how long to boil jars to sterilize

The length of time required to boil jars to sterilize them depends on a few factors, including the size of the jars and altitude at which you are cooking. As a general rule of thumb, you should boil jars for at least 10 minutes to ensure they are sterile.

If you are at an altitude of 1,000 feet or more above sea level, you will need to increase the boiling time to ensure proper sterilization. For altitudes between 1,001 and 6,000 feet, boil the jars for an additional 1 minute for each 1,000 feet of elevation. For altitudes above 6,000 feet, boil the jars for an additional 2 minutes for each 1,000 feet of elevation.

It's also important to note that you should always start timing the boiling process once the water in the pot has reached a rolling boil, and you should make sure that the jars are completely submerged in water during the entire process.
